英国著名杂志《自然》是世界上最早的国际性科技期刊，也是国际最权威的科学杂志之一，自1869年创刊以来，《自然》杂志每年都会以前一年所发表的论文为基础，衡量不同国家和研究机构的科研实力，并对往年的数据进行比较。

“自然出版指数”（NPI）是根据各科研机构与高校在《自然》和其他17本自然系列研究期刊上出版的文章数计算，常被作为衡量高质量的基础性研究的标志性指标。该指数每月更新一次，记录过去12个月内发表的文章数据。

而“自然指数”（NI）是衡量国家与科研单位（大学）科研水平的新的指标，“自然指数”的依据是包括《自然》、《细胞》、《科学》在内的68家期刊。68家期刊，是因为Nature集团基于学界的评价，把它们看成是科学界各学科最好的学术期刊，有人甚至认为，没有在这些期刊经常发表文章，就等于远离前沿，而且对你单位的学术影响力（“自然指数”）亦就没有贡献。
